RANCHI: Shortage of smaller denomination notes has taken a toll on labourers in the city who are now without any work. Several labourers are already running out of money and are finding it difficult to run their household. Usually, a large number of labourers gather at Chandani Chowk, Singh Mor, Lalpur Chowk and Birsha Chowk every morning, from where they are taken to construction sites by various contractors.
Following demonetization, there has been a decline in the number of laboruers at these places.
Amit Kujur, a resident of Tupudana village, said the government should have taken into account the impact of the ban on labourers before making the final call. "My contractor has refused to pay me due to unavailability of notes. I have two sons and a daughter studying in private schools", he said. Kujur added while those with bank accounts can get money sooner or later, those without the same are the main sufferers.
Even small contractors have been affected by the move. Contractor Sanjay Kashyap said work is likely to come to a halt as he needs to buy building materials and other owners are not ready to accept scrapped notes despite repeated requests.
